A Trip to Bombay

Well, Bombay Bistro, that is. For date night dinner, we couldn’t quite decide what type of cuisine we wanted, so we consulted the good ole Urban Spoon app.  The first two suggestions it came up with were no-go’s, but the third definitely piqued our palates.  So, off to Bombay Bistro we went.

The place is situated on the corner of a tiny strip mall and, sadly, the traffic to that place seems to have thinned due to the opening of a newly revitalized town center-type of area about two blocks away.  Despite this, the place seems to have a loyal following of foodies and others who happen to be either legacy diners or those who are now in the know thanks to those legacy diners.

Walking in you get a strong whiff of the deliciously savory spices that will ultimately permeate your meal as well as your clothes.   It’s a tiny space that seats around 50 with an open view of the delicacies chefs are working on in the kitchen and many jars of spices in front of them.

Having been pretty hungry, we opted to order an appetizer, so we decided to try the Papri Chaat.   DJ said the cracker-like crust tasted like pie crust, while I thought it tasted more like Ritz crackers.   On top of that crust was diced potato and chickpeas mixed in with homemade yogurt, cilantro and tamarind chutney.  The sauces were artfully poured on top of the dish, but once we dug in, it was a delicious mess.

With our meal, I decided to have a traditional Indian Masala Chai while DJ had a Kingfisher beer. For entrees, I had hot and spicy Lamb Vindaloo which was served elegantly in a tealight candle-heated individual serving dish and DJ had the vegetarian dish, Saag Paneer, all with spiced basmati rice and hot doughy naan bread on the side.

After initially not knowing what to go out to eat, I was quite happy with all the wonderfully spicy, savory flavors and verying textures.  All-in-all it was a deliciously successful Friday date night dinner.
